The mission of the Carolina Wind Symphony is to present entertaining and exciting live performances, and to rehearse wind and percussion literature at the highest artistic, expressive, and technical levels. The Carolina Wind Symphony is a community of gifted musicians from numerous professions and vocations who perpetuate the experience of life-long music-making. Through rehearsal and insightful performance of standard wind band repertoire, as well as innovative new compositions, we seek to develop new audiences of all ages for wind and percussion music.
Charles T. "Tim" Franklin served as Director of Bands at Columbia High School (SC), Irmo High School (SC), South Lakes High School (VA), James Madison High School (VA) and as Director of Bands & Orchestras for the Frederick County (MD) Visual and Performing Arts Academy.
Bands under Mr. Franklin's direction have performed at the National Concert Band Festival, the MENC National Convention, the Southern Conductor's Symposium at the University of Southern Mississippi, the South Carolina Music Educator's Association In-Service and the University of South Carolina Concert Band Clinic. His concert and marching bands have won numerous First Place Awards and Grand Championships, including two top-10 finalist performances at the Bands of America Grand Nationals.
Mr. Franklin was the principal tubaist for the Columbia Philharmonic Orchestra (now the SC Philharmonic Orchestra) beginning in 1971 as a high school student, and continuing until 1978.
Mr. Franklin is a six-time recipient of the National Band Association's Citation of Excellence. Professional affiliations have included the SC Music Educators Association, the SC Band Directors Association, the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association, the Maryland Music Educators Association, the National Band Association, the World Association of Symphonic Bands & Ensembles, and. He is also a Life Member of the International Percy Grainger Society. Mr. Franklin served as SC All-State Band Chairman, President of SCBDA, and Chairman of the District 12 Band Directors Association in Fairfax County, Virginia.
